Software and devices I'm using as of May 2022
A list of software and devices I'm using as of May 2022.
I thought it would be interesting to catalogue the tools that I currently use, so that I can look at them a few years from now and see how they've changed. (I am not receiving any compensation from the vendors or publishers of the products listed on this page—this is just for myself.)
General software #
- Microsoft Windows 10: My daily driver. I would like to switch away from it for privacy reasons. However, some of the software that I use isn't currently available distributed for Linux (in particular, Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer), and some of my games don't run (or don't run well) on macOS. I am thinking about using macOS as my daily driver and Windows for the few things I can't do on macOS, though.
- Linux (currently Fedora): For programming.
Internet-related applications and services #
- Mozilla Firefox
- uBlock Origin
- 1Password Firefox plugin
- Google Chrome: For when a site doesn't function properly in Firefox. I hope that this becomes much less necessary now that I have stopped using NoScript.
- ProtonMail
- eM Client: Email client.
- Filen: Cloud file storage.
- Mullvad VPN
- CloudFlare DNS
- Hetzner Cloud VPS
- nginx
- Netlify
Creative applications #
- Affinity Photo: My go-to for image editing. 💕
- Affinity Designer: My go-to for editing and tracing vector images. 🌟
- GIMP: What I use to create simple animated GIFs.
- OpenToonz: I don't use this as often, but I use it when I want more complex animations.
Other software and services #
- 1Password
- Azure Data Studio
- QOwnNotes
- ShareX: Image capture and annotation on Microsoft Windows.
- Sublime Text
Devices #
- Acer Predator 17, purchased in March 2017.
- Dell Latitude E6440, purchased refurbished in February 2020.
- iPhone 11. I switched from my five-year-old Samsung Galaxy S6 because I hope to enjoy Apple's publishing of software updates (and in particular security updates) for at least five years.
- Bose QC35 I: Wireless noise-cancelling headphones, purchased in October 2020. These have brought me a lot of joy!
